Everybody at Western Illinois University loves Colonel Rock IV! But have you ever thought about what it takes to make a live mascot possible? Business principles apply here, too!
We stepped on campus this week to hear all about Colonel Rock IV (better known as "Ray"), WIU's live mascot. Handler Joe Roselieb (who also happens to be the Assistant Vice President of Student Success and Auxiliary Services) gave us the inside scoop about the history of the live mascot program at Western, and similar programs at other schools. You wouldn't think about creating a business plan for an animal, but it's kind of necessary in some cases.
Joe talked about the budget for the live mascot, the requirements for ownership, and how they creatively generate enthusiasm (and revenue) that supports university efforts and school spirit. We saw examples of other university live mascots and learned about the rules & regulations involved. The added bonus was having an extra participant in CEO that day - Ray himself. Thanks to Joe for joining us and bringing Colonel Rock IV along!
